40 years as a news shooter and still going strong

I am lucky enough to meet and be inspired by many great shooters in the course of my travels. One man who stands out is Richard Atkinson – a South African who has been there, seen it, done it and is still at the cutting edge of this ever evolving business.

Richard has been shooting news since the seventies and was an early adopter to the “Shoot/Edit” phenomenon. About three years ago I sat down with him and recorded the interview below where he talks about his career, the technology and his philosophy on shooting. It’s a great interview and well worth a listen.

Since the interview was recorded Richard has mastered FCPX and brought himself an FS7 – he really is still pushing the boundaries and putting much younger men to shame. Mr Atkinson I salute you!

Remember if you love shooting, telling stories and learning about our business then you should subscribe to imagejunkies and receive your free ebook “Life saving travel tips for journalists” – a handbook put together over the course of many years.
